Toko Det · Indonesian Eatery in Playa del Inglés, Gran Canaria

Few cuisines are as generous as the Indonesian one: spices with depth, dishes that fill the table, and the natural assumption that everything is shared. That cuisine now has a home on Gran Canaria, with a modern twist of its own. Brother and sister Han and Bernadette are setting the table.

Our story

A story worth tasting

Han has lived on Gran Canaria since 2013. Anyone who has been around here a while knows him as a hairdresser: he ran several salons in the Netherlands and spent years behind the chair on the island as well. Less well known is that he also ran a restaurant. What connects both worlds is what has always driven Han: people around him, looking after them, a good conversation. And food. Han has a sharp eye for good dishes from every corner of the world and a gift you rarely come across: he can tell what you will love before you have tasted it.

Bernadette was lucky: Indonesian cooking found her early. For years she watched Indonesian women cook the way it should be done: the traditional way, with what was there, and with a feel for flavour that no cookbook can teach. What began as watching became a craft. Later she helped more than once to set up new restaurants and eateries, and each time she stayed on as the cook. The very cuisine so many people here miss is one she has had in her hands since she was young. Cooking is in her blood.

What moves her most in Indonesian cooking is not one particular dish but the making itself: the preparation, the balance, the moment it is exactly right. For Bernadette food has to look good and be authentic. And authentic is not the same as traditional. The art is to take pure, simple ingredients and create something that truly excites your palate. Together with what turns food into an experience: being together, talking, sharing.

Brother and sister share that love. For food, for company, for being there for each other. From the moment Bernadette decided to move to Gran Canaria too, Han could not wait to build something here together. Not the Indonesian restaurant you know, with the batik, the carved wood and the rattan chairs, but their own take: a modern, welcoming, atmospheric toko where you taste their favourite flavours.

Why a toko? Say "Indonesian restaurant" and people expect a fixed menu. If something is missing, it feels wrong. A toko is an eatery, a place to taste. Where the menu is allowed to surprise and change, and where one day you might pick something up to take home. Han and Bernadette are starting small, in a lovely spot in the Cita Shopping Center in Playa del Inglés. And that is how Toko Det Indonesian Eatery was born.
